Brief

The contemporary quartet Forbidden Color and the Franco-American composer Pierce Warnecke present a collaboration that reads, questions, interprets, dissolves and superimposes the various spaces surrounding the stage where the musicians perform.

)|Es-p a_c•e.s|(, using multi-capture and broadcast systems, offers a reflection on the notion of space inspired by Gilles Clément’s Tiers Paysage. Third Landscapes—these non-places, inter-spaces and parentheses of surfaces—lie on the margins of the two major categories of outdoor spaces: ‘controlled’ spaces, exploited by humans, and so-called ‘natural’ spaces.

In residence at the GMEA National Centre for Musical Creation in Albi — Tarn, the ensemble structured five compositions that play with these notions of space, and reimagine the constructed boundaries between ‘nature’ spaces (here: outdoors, field recordings, etc.) and ‘culture’ spaces (here: theatre/concert halls, etc.).

The main objective of the residency was, above all, to set up an immersive sound installation (directional speakers, vibration speakers and Bluetooth speakers) in which the audience surrounds the performers, all encircled by multiple sound sources creating a light, low-tech acousmonium.
